Food, Fun, Family, Friends & Fur

Not necessarily in that order. But where I will continue and regularly talk about all that goes on in the life of Mr Mom, my humorous stories about my husband, family and travels to the serious topics of my work and passions to the getting old part of my life, and what that means for an old queen like myself.

Quinoa shake

As we end January, I wonder how many of us continue on with the changes that we have started for the new year.
I for one have fallen although briefly, I have had a set back, in that I cheated on my changes. I was just craving some sugar…
I have both juiced and blended before and added the protein powders to the blended drinks. For me though they set me up for huge cravings (all the sugars), not exactly great for a diabetic.
As many of you know I have a love affair with quinoa though, and I love the nutty, oatie flavor. So thinking that I wanted something quick and of course transportable, I decided to make a drink from quinoa. Not only did it provide me that sweetness I sometimes crave but it was great way to fill me up for longer than a light breakfast.
I certainly would not have this daily but say once or twice a week, meal for me are the way. Mentally it is comforting to just sit and eat something, and tell myself that I am full. A drink always feels like there should be another.
So here it is my quinoa shake: I prefer this ice cold
  1. Puree 1 cup cooked quinoa
  2. Cup iced cubes into the quinoa to blend smooth
  3. 1 table spoon honey
  4. A pinch of nutmeg
  5. A pinch of cinnamon
  6. ¼ cup almond milk(vanilla)
  7. ¼ cup berries(optional)
Blend until like a thick shake. I do not put in the spices if I am adding fruit. Depending on the ripeness of the berries I may cut down on the honey as well.
I do not like the texture when I pre make this, for me you might like to make it the night before and have it ready. n
Now if you want to add protein powder I suppose you could, to me it just adds some unnecessary calories, you may want to alternate this with every other time you have this drink.
I find that I often only have to have an apple for lunch or something really small as this fills me for a long time.
As I have said many times you must find what works for you . You have to be able to endure your choice for the length of your time to reach your goals and of course then maintaining them.
Before starting any restrictive diets or dietary changes make sure you consult with your doctor.
Another tip is to document what you are eating for two reasons, 1 it gives you a daily overview of what you intake and 2 if there are any concerns that cause you to have to see your doctor again you will be able to show to him what you have done to make changes.
For me as a diabetic, this is low in my allotted intake of sugar and provides me with a filling alternative to have on the go.
Enjoy!
